The Stream
by Brian Clarke This first novel by renowned angling writer Brian Clarke records the gradual, debilitating effects of industrial development on a small stream in rural England. By focusing on the rarely observed struggles of wildlife caught up in the chaos of human action and priorities, Clarke sharpens our understanding of the precariousness of all of the world's waterways. -- ERIC A. Prodigal Summer
by Barbara Kingsolver This beautifully written novel contains three interwoven stories that take place in the Appalachian Mountains: a wildlife biologist who falls in love with a hunter, two old neighbors who haggle with each other over pesticide use on their farms, and a biology Ph.D. student-turned-farmer's wife who is learning to love her new lifestyle. All three struggle with their connections to the land and in the process help us examine our own. I can never put down one of Kingsolver's books and this one is no exception -- a must-read and a great gift! -- MARNI RAPOPORT |

A Thousand Acres
by Jane Smiley This 1991 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is best known for its exploration of the tortured relationships among a domineering old farmer and his three daughters -- a modern-day King Lear, told from the evil daughters' point of view. But the book also contains a powerful fictional indictment of the overuse of pesticides on American farms. Smiley shows us, more starkly than any numerical study possibly could, how deadly chemicals can blight and poison not only the pests the farmer hates, but also the lives of his own children. -- KATHRIN DAY LASSILA |
