Envisioning a Sustainable Chile

As Chile looks to support and sustain its impressive economic growth, its energy sector must manage energy costs and ensure reliability, provide universal energy access, and meet increasingly ambitious environmental targets. Chile can rise to the challenge with a decisive turn to renewable energy.

This analysis examines different scenarios for the Chilean electricity grid's evolution from 2011 to 2031, in an effort to highlight the consequences of higher adoption of renewable resources and constrained hydrocarbon and transmission expansion. We used SWITCH, a long-term capacity expansion model that was developed in the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley.
