New Climate Committee Shows Congressional Commitment

WASHINGTON (February 6, 2007) – NRDC today praised House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Energy and Commerce Chairman John Dingell (D-Mich.) and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D.-Calif.) for agreeing on the creation of a new House select committee on global warming.

Below is the statement of Karen Wayland, legislative director for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC):

"This new committee demonstrates that our new Congress is committed to deliver global warming solutions and willing to work through the political logjams that have delayed action for too long.

"We look forward to working with this committee and the existing committees of Congress to demonstrate that solutions to global warming are available and need to be put in place without further delay.

"The 110th Congress should look to the recommendations of scientists and business who say we must reduce global warming pollution starting now and achieve large cuts by mid-century to really tackle this problem. NRDC is eager to be a part of this effort."
