Proposed Environmental Standards Set Anacostia River Restoration In Motion

WASHINGTON (February 12, 2007) – The Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) released draft environmental standards today that will ensure new AWC development is held to the highest “green” standards. 

 

“The new standards will be instrumental in revitalizing the river and the surrounding neighborhoods,” said Nancy Stoner, director of the Clean Water Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “We are looking forward to a healthy river as the centerpiece of a renewed community. These standards will help us achieve that goal.”

 

Stoner served as co-chair of the AWC Environmental Standards Development Committee, made up of engineers, developers, conservation organizations and regulatory specialists. The committee proposed standards that address four development issues: integrated environmental design, green building, stormwater control, and site planning and preservation.

 

Stoner added, “The new standards are the result of a truly collaborative process. The AWC Board brought together all the stakeholders to come up with this proposal that will result in clean water, new wildlife habitat and healthy communities surrounding the Anacostia.”

 

The announcement of the proposed standards officially kicks off a 30-day public comment period.
