Food Matters Fact Sheet: Empowering Cities to Tackle Food Waste

When it comes to tackling food waste, cities are on the front lines. Cities often control waste management, land use, and local health and food regulations, and can be more nimble in adopting new programs and policies. Because of this, NRDC’s Food Matter’s initiative partners with cities to reduce food waste by 15 percent within five years through a set of innovative policies and programs. Baltimore and Denver, two of our main partner cities, have already made ambitious commitments to action on food waste, and we are working with an everexpanding network of cities to evaluate, replicate, and scale these solutions across the country.
